We are Venom!
My aunt, who is bipolar, never really made a comeback from the casting of Tobey Maguire as Peter Parker in the Spider Man-movies.
"Tobey" she hissed, in the ambulance on the way to admittance, "Tobey Maguire looks like the bastard-child of an orch raping a gnome (she used to make a lot of references to fantasy, Harry Potter being her favorite movies). And that smile! What is he so damn smug about!"
She always did get to the core of things, my aunt.
"Its alright, Bettie", I petted her on her bipolar shoulder, "at least they got the Green Goblin right. Willem Dafoe has SO got the diabolical charm, presence and - not least importantly - face that one would expect on that old crazed, cross-dressing, green troll. Look at the cheekbone! Its him in the comics!"
Then came the thing:

I was young and naive in those days, not knowing that the casting-process of the Spider Man-movie enterprise had a personal grudge against me. As if Tobey and turning Willem Dafoe into a lego-nightmare wasn't enough; Kirsten Dunst for Mary-Jeane? Um, sure. And in the spirit of that, howsit about Jay Leno as Marilyn Monroe? The hits just kept coming.
Therefore, one felt that one was rather accustomed to atrocities like this by the third film. Eddie Brock, arguably the most interesting and dynamic super-villain in the Marvel-Universe, shouldn't be too hard to cast; you're looking for a scruffy, muscular man in his mid-thirties with a sort of sad, primitive charisma, as bit of an outcast, most importantly; big and muscular.

EBONY/BLANC
We love working with contrasts.

Thats why I need to get myself down to the French Riviera. A bipolar friend of mine once told me that on the French Riviera in general - and in Nice in particular - it is customary for really old, ugly white men to walk around arm-in-arm with beautiful young, black women. In public.
My friend also told me about a game he invented to honour this paradox: Every time he spotted a white, rich, ugly, really really old man displaying his nubian trophy-queen in this manner, my friend shouted, at the top of his lungs:
EBONY/BLANC!
EBONY/BLANC!
By doing so, he assured me, he was not making a statement on the social/economic/racial/patriarchal aspects of the ebony/blanc occurence as much as simply commenting on the contrast of it all. Because contrasts made him feel confident of his own existence, contrast gave him something to behave towards.
I guess we all want that.

it's all about the details.
take a look at this amazing live recording from new order back in '84 (haha that's one year before i was even born...shiet)
i mean, first of, look at how he tears the muff-thingy off the mic at 0:35.
second, fierce drumming in a freakin tucked-in shirt without any noticeable sweating.
third, white tube-socks in navy blue slip-ons.
fourth, assymetric colormatching between basist and singer/guitarrist.
fifth, beating that guitarr like it owns you money, barely without moving you feet. skills.
and there's alot more, see for yourselves...

Metal Up Your grAss!

Growing up in a little shitty town outside of Stockholm in the 80's was all about metal for me. It all started out with the usual Kiss and Twisted Sister but moved pretty fast to more heavy groups such as W.A.S.P, Iron Maiden, Ozzy and Metallica.
One thing in general in the 80's was important for the swedish metalfans and that was a radioshow called Rockbox that aired every saturday between 18.15-1900, yup thats right, 45 headbangin minutes a week was all that we got from the public radio. Here you had this dude Per who was the host that interviewed almost everybody from Bruce Dickinson, Lars Ulrich and Ronnie James Dio to more obuscure artists like King Diamond, Kreator and UDO (yup, the little german who gave us Balls To The Wall), Per also told us that the alarmclock on his stereo went off every morning playing Madhouse with thrashgods Anthrax.
Anyway, this show had such a major input on me and really made me more interested in music in general. So here you go, Grass top 10 stringshredding, skinbanging, hairraising, ballbreaking monsterous thrashmetalfukkers ever.
10. Angel Witch - Angel Of Death. This is like the godfathers of thrashmetal, you can judge for yourself but dont come and say Metallica didnt have this song in mind when they wrote For Whom The Bell Tolls.
9. Exodus - The Toxic Waltz. One of the best thrashvideos ever made, anyone up for a dance?
8. Overkill - In Union We Stand. The singer in this band calls himself Bobby Blitz and got a face only a mother could love, still he manages to lead these New Jersey legends year after year.
7. Agent Steel - Unstoppable Force. This was the last song I heard on my first ever episode of Rockbox and its been a favourite for 22 years now.
6. Flotsam & Jetsam - No Place For Disgrace. Jason Newstead used to play in this band, Jason who? You say.
5. Testament - Trial By Fire. Chuck Billy got one of the best voices in thrashmetal.
4. Suicidal Tendencies - You Can't Bring Me Down. Bay-Areafavourite
3. Metallica - Fight Fire With Fire. A bit predictible but Metallica is Metallica.
2. Slayer - South Of Heaven. No list would be complete without Slayer.
1. Anthrax - Armed And Dangerous. This song just hits the nail. The beautiful intro, the melodic voice of Joey Belladonna and the pure fuckin power of Anthrax!

Snuff 3 - The Resurrection?
That wonderful human ability of turning something truly dreadful into something truly dreadful that you can also laugh at! When Joaquin Phoenix personified bipolar depression on his last visit to David Letterman we all (most of us anyway) felt truly sorry for him; this was obviously a man who had
a) stepped off the lithium way to soon
b) stepped up on other types of drugs way too often
c) suffered severe brain damage and murdered his stylist AND his agent in a fit of rage several weeks before the visit to the the show and most likely spent those weeks living in a barrel full of fish
It was truly excruciating watching that appearance, truly and utterly horrendous, in a way similar to witnessing a car accident and being unable to stop looking.
I mean, we love Joaquin. Not even talking about his gift for acting, we love his shy, akward but indie-handsome appearance, his seemingly no bullshit-approach to celebrity status and the fact that he was named "Leaf" as a child but switched to the much more manageable WAA-KIIN before going to Hollywood.
The simple fact that you seldom even look at him as River Phoenix younger brother is a testament to that rugged and rare charisma of his. He stepped out of the shadow of a dead legend with the same ease that Eddie Murphy got boring.
No one, I say no one, could have dropped the "Yeah man! Snuff 2 - the resurrection!" line in seriously flawed Nicolas Cage-flick "8 millimeter" better than Joaquin Phoenix. He even pulled of Johnny Cash in a way similar to Peter Jackson making "Lord of the Rings" work despite a zillion hardcore fans having impossible expectations on the movie. We want Joaquin to do good, even if that means him going postal and deciding to be a rapper all of a sudden - even if that decision is a pr scam - because we feel that he is, real.
Thats why it hurts. It hurts, watching him being ridiculed in front of millions of people on Late Night, it hurts to think of the humiliation and the damage done to his career on that evening.
And thats why clips like this makes being a human a little more bearable. Because at the end of the day we cant help Joaquin - we dont even know him - and Joaquin doesnt need our help any more than he needs our gossiping on the reasons for his horrible Letterman-performance. A mans sickness is on display for all of us small people to see and that is in itself more sickening than Letterman taking advantage of the situation for the sake of a few cheap laughs. Its all a depressing mess really, the cold, cynical essence of our cultural obsession with celebrities.
But! Enjoy this clip, the raw comedy of it, and we are suddenly all winners. We turn sadness into joy with a few strokes of youtubing, effectively creating a distance to real life - the real life where people get clinically depressed - thus enriching our own pitty existences by having something to show to our friends the next time we see them. Forget about responsibility, humanism, you just gotta see this!
Credit to the originator of the video of course, and even more credit to Joaquin Phoenix, who is not a real person any more than we are all real people watching a person who is not real to us. Keeping it real, in mediaworld.
And lets all hope for that resurrection to Joaquin Phoenix acting career. I would even watch him portray Letterman.
